Caelan Doris Included in Irish Selection While McCarthy Left Out
Returning manager Andy Farrell has named skipper Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall internationals, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.
Doris, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in early May, has come back to provincial training, with doubts lingering if he will be ready to play against New Zealand in the US on November 1.
Second row McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the opening Lions Test against Australia in the summer.
Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, while number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery after the summer tour.
Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player squad, however Irish rugby authorities states uncapped provincial duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped Connacht wing Bolton will travel to the US as "reserves".
After facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, the team host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented the coach, back to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a mostly experienced selection, Leinster's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting fly-half position. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, with the two players poised to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship game at Croke Park.
Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen with Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a recall for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of centre options. Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at full-back.
Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and the Lobos.
Paddy McCarthy is the sole new name in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship matches this season and played in the second string's loss by England in Bristol previously.
The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, but did not earn a international appearance.
Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is retained, and veteran Ulster second row Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who started all three Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to cover for Doris should the captain does not regain full fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.
The national team will assemble in the capital on Monday before flying to the US on the following day.
