Unusual Crimson Electrical Discharge Photographed in the Heavens

A group of photography enthusiasts in New Zealand have recorded images of “red sprites”, among the least common light phenomena globally, where glowing scarlet illuminations appear in the atmosphere.

An Unforgettable Night of Discovery

The photographers had originally set out to photograph the night sky over the unique geological structures in the lower part of the country on 11 October, before encountering the extraordinary event.

Assuming they would be fortunate to get good weather that evening, but their night became “a truly memorable experience,” one photographer commented.

“He was checking his files for a galaxy composite and found he had captured crimson electrical bursts,” the individual noted. “The discovery was astounding – it resulted in screaming and shouting and numerous expressions in the dark.”

Explaining Red Sprites

Red sprites are bursts of electrical energy in the higher atmospheric layers, caused by thunderstorms. In contrast to lightning that strikes downward to the ground, the phenomena propel upward towards the mesospheric region, creating structures that look like vertical forms, root vegetables or even jellyfish. The first photograph of a this phenomenon was captured – unintentionally – in that year, by a research unit at the University of Minnesota.

Momentary and Otherworldly Sightings

The phenomena last for such a short time – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are rarely visible to the unaided vision, but a team member had a lucky break. “By chance, I was gazing directly at a sprite when it took place – just a perfect coincidence viewing the right part of the sky and I witnessed a momentary scarlet burst,” he commented.

Seeing the phenomena was a dream for the photographer, an acclaimed night scape photographer. “It looks like you’re seeing an impossible sight, it feels otherworldly … there is an intense scarlet hue that is visible for an instant, so it is fascinating to see.”

Skill-Based and Innovative Mastery

Capturing a this phenomenon needs a mastery of technical photography, as well as an familiarity with atmospheric physics and innovative thinking, the photographer explained. “It is a deeply engaging category of art that’s very rewarding as well.”

One of the other individuals said it was one of the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his career. “I could see the galactic band shining above the skyline while these enormous red tendrils of illumination danced above a electrical event at a great distance,” he explained.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no other images capturing red sprites and the galactic core from the southern perspective in a single image.

“It was one of those moments when you realize you are seeing a phenomenon you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
